I’ve been invited (tagged) to do the “Next Big Thing Blog Tour” by the wonderful Helen Johannes. This “Tour” was organized to encourage writers to share their works-in-progress. I’ve tagged four other authors that are all working on exciting projects as well, so be sure to link back to their websites at the bottom of the page to see their Next Big Thing posts after reading mine.
Rather than telling you about my story, I thought my somewhat pushy main character, Piper, could tell you about it. After all, I’m just writing the thing, Piper is actually the one telling me the story.
What is the title of your book?
Piper: Kayla calls my story The Necromancer of Possum Bluff, after my hometown. I think it’s a stupid name. I’d rather it be called, Hot Love in Oklahoma or The Red Head Rocks the Dead, but whatever. Until I can take over her fingers, she gets to keep the stupid title.
Where did the idea come from for the book?
Piper: From my life, duh.
Kayla: There’s a bit more to it than that, Piper, and you know it.
Piper: Fine. But it’s kinda creepy to have people ask this stuff, ya know?
Okay, so the way she tells it, Kayla fell in love with the Arbuckle Wilderness, which is near my mobile home, and wanted to tell a paranormal romance story set in the area. That’s why she chose me, because there’s a bunch of paranormal and a ton of romance in my life. Oh, and there’s a twister, but those are kinda normal around here.
What genre does your book fall under?
Piper: Just told ya’.
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Piper: I think Jennifer Lawrence would work for me.
Kayla: Are you kidding? You’re tall and thin and have bright red hair.
Piper: This is supposed to be my interview, remember? I’d love to have Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth as my co-stars.
Kayla: This book isn’t ANYTHING like Hunger Games. It’s a New Adult Paranormal Romance for crying out loud!
Piper: Since your so smart, who’d you choose?
Kayla: Liam’s brother Chris would work for Durran, and Ian Somerhalder for Fillian. For you, I’d say Christina Hendricks.
Piper: You’re so predictable. Everyone wants Chris or Ian for their leading men.
Kayla: Stop complaining. At least I didn’t say Robert Pattinson.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
Piper: I’m a high school drop out, drug addict, and unwed mother who isn’t anyone’s idea of a hero, but that’s just what I have to become to keep my family safe, and along the way, I find real love in the last place I’d ever look.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Piper: Ask her.
Kayla: I’m not sure yet.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
Piper: She used my story as her NaNoWriMo submission this year, and isn’t quite finished with it yet. If one of you could get her to sit still long enough to get the rest of the words out, I’d be much obliged.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Piper: I don’t know. I hate paranormal books—all those lovesick vampires drive me crazy. That’s why I didn’t recognize the necromancers for what they were at first. I just thought they were really cute cowboys.
Kayla: *sighs heavily and drops her head into her hands*
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
Piper: Well, I’m kinda a unique character, as my step-daddy says. I’m pretty strong, but in surprising ways that have nothing to do with magic and everything to do with myself. I guess you could say I inspired my story.
What else about your book might pique the reader interest?
Kayla: This isn’t your normal action adventure paranormal romance, and it doesn’t have the regular ending. While it’s a romance, the story is also about the unexpected, un-magical strength a young woman finds in herself.
Thanks so much for reading about my current work in progress! Now that you’re done, go and have a look at these other up-and-coming authors who have wonderful stories to tell!
